Protect Our Past
What We Do
Historic places are where our stories begin. They connect us to the past, shape our communities in the present, and inspire the future. These places give Cape Cod its character, beauty, and sense of identity — and they belong to all of us.
Protect Our Past works to preserve historic buildings, cultural landscapes, and community character through advocacy, education, storytelling, films, events, and preservation initiatives.
Thanks to the passion and support of our community, POP continues to raise awareness about the importance of preservation while helping protect the places that matter most.
Together, we can preserve the history, craftsmanship, and architectural heritage that define our communities — for ourselves, for each other, and for future generations.
Protect Our Past
Respect. Restore. Revive.
Our work is guided by three simple ideas: respect what remains, restore what can be saved, and revive appreciation for the historic places that give Cape Cod its character.
Respect
Cape Cod’s historic homes, streetscapes, and village centers tell the story of who we are. From saltboxes to sea captains’ homes, these places connect us to generations of craftsmanship, community, and coastal heritage. We believe preservation begins with respect — for the architecture, the materials, the history, and the character that make Cape Cod unlike anywhere else.
Restore
Protect Our Past advocates for Cape Cod’s original identity through the preservation of historic homes, buildings, and streetscapes. We speak up for threatened properties, engage local decision-makers, educate the public, and encourage restoration over demolition whenever possible. Through films, workshops, events, and advocacy, we work to preserve the craftsmanship and cultural fabric of our communities.
Revive
Preservation does more than save buildings — it revives communities. By protecting historic places, we strengthen Cape Cod’s sense of place, support local identity, and inspire future generations to value thoughtful stewardship. The result is a more beautiful, connected, and authentic Cape Cod rooted in history, character, and community.
